Super Sales on Super Heroes: Book 2 & Audiobook

Crazy times.

The book is doing better than beyond my wildest expectations.

Rank 77 in kindle sold. I don't even know how to take that.

I've begun writing book 2 as you all might have suspected by this point. We'll see what I can do about getting this one out sooner rather than later.

In other news, Jeff Hays has agreed to do the Audiobook for book 1!

We're hoping to have it launched by the end of June.

  1. Great!! I just finished book 1 and was looking for more.. Pity it's not already out.
I find that the story is well executed. I had no rolling eyes moment. But I think that in this kind of book touch of erotica woulden't have hurt.
Anyway, I'm curious William, what inspired you for the setting? The protagonist's power has some similarities with the one in the "The Gamer" webtoon.

  2. As far as erotica goes, try Wild Wastes. :)

For the inspiration. Old 2000's upgrade games.

    4. Heh, you must hate the fact that I write Wild Wastes then. :)

  3. Already read. XD In fact I stumbled upon your book because it was correlated by the "Harem or polygamy fiction" tag.

From what I have seen so far there are always readers that dislike characters copulating in a descriptive way. I agree that it’s not necessary for a good story, especially when this is overdone and an excuse for poor plot. But if blended well I think it gives more depth, as it widens the spectrum of emotions and feelings by which a reader gets involved.

    Keep up the good work!

  4. I enjoyed this book! Please keep it as story focused as you've been doing, I appreciate how little 18+ there is since to me thats just filler! Btw I enjoyed the siege moments. If you take recommendations then more cool tech would be nice! Also more money grubbing.

  7. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and am looking forward to the sequel. I do have one question, though. While reading I thought of several super powers Felix's team could definitely use. Supernatural healing and the ability to instill Felix himself with powers or at least increased durability are at the top of the list. Has he not tried that because he just hasn't thought of it or because you don't want to go there? Giving himself super powers via giving powers to others does have a "wishing for more wishes" vibe, I admit.

    1. Felix is a bit of a hoarder.

You consider it points well spent, he has a difference of opinion. :)

He's also very reactive. Or so he is in book 1.

      Delete
    2. This was exactly what I was thinking. It seems like the only limit to Felix's power is his imagination. Why not give someone he trusts a limited version of his own power so he could alter himself? Brilliant! I actually figured that it was going to happen eventually before it all ended.

  8. Just finished "S.S. on S.H.", book 1. Very well thought out and written. Great characters. Especially Andrea. Erotica not necessary to make up for poor quality writing in this book, because there was no poor writing in this book. Looking forward to book 2. Looking forward to reading more background on the characters of Miu and Felicia. Andrea made me laugh all through the book. Great character development there. Thanks.

  9. I must say this book was very well written and drew me in throughout. I have agreed with everyone else's comments but I'm surprised noone else has spoken on the plot twists. Felix may be on the villains side because of his actions, but he is definitely protective of his organization for good personal reasons. I'm a bit surprised at the depth of Felix's character. And very, very pleased. He was extremely relatable, as much as anyone real is. It's almost as if you modeled him off of a real person.

Great book, and I'm waiting eagerly for book 2.

  12. Just finished the first book so glad to hear a sequel is coming out. It was a great move showing how "Heroes vs Villains" or "Good vs Evil" is never black and white but rather shades of gray all over. Plus I enjoyed the characters and their antics. Especially on the core cast and how they grew in the story. (Andrea was always one who made me chuckles or facepalm with a grin at her antics.)

    1. Glad to hear that!

  13. I rather enjoyed the first book, so I'm glad to hear there'll be a second. I know it's a bit shallow, but I love these kind of wish fulfillment novels and the concept is great.

Things to work on. Try not to neglect characters you encouraged the readers to invest in, and if they don't appear or hardly get mentioned for chapter after chapter, give us some idea why. Kit and Miu seemed to be pushed aside in favour of Lily and Andrea (with Victoria abruptly added) during the last third of the novel until the climax where had their dramatic last moments or played a critical role in the final events. Felt irritated when I was left wondering what was happening with them, only for them to return as though they had always been there. Especially when Kit had been established as his right hand for most of the novel until right after interrogating Dimitry's people, after which she seemed to vanish. If there's a reason, Kit avoiding Felix due to moral conflict over some of his decision, miu distancing herself due to feeling emotionally compromised over how much she'd been effected by him almost dying, don't just leave us wondering. This could be explained by Felix just being too insensitive to the feelings of the people around him to notice, but it still feels frustrating.
Also, the Draw and Points seemed to get a little sloppy and cavalier later in the novel. We're never told what benefit he gets from people without Powers and what turning the Draw up on them does to them. Supers lose the percent of their Powers equal to the percent of the Draw, but what do normal people lose? What is he Drawing? Potential for Powers that don't exist yet? Points based on their other stats and skills?
Plus if he's Drawing the powers of most of the Supers he owns for his own abilities except for the department heads and the Supers on the security teams, and that's why he needs to mostly rely on military training and advanced weaponry for their defense, then you need to explain that. Give us a general idea where his points or coming from, or it just feels like you're just ignoring it and people start seeing a plot hole.

Not giving you a hard time here, I love this series that you're starting. I just want to keep enjoying it without anything tripping me up. So long as it's at least consistent, you'll get less people bashing you about little things. The self-righteous ones will still post negative reviews though.

    1. Honestly I admit you brought up points I overlooked. While Kit I can understand with distancing herself as she was in conflict about the morals of the situation, Miu we never really know why she stayed so distant from Felix in the first place. As you mentioned as well Andrea and Lily definitely gained more attention as the book went on although they were also always trying to be ontop of Felix whereas Miu was avoiding and such. Also don't forget about The war maiden either if your gonna mention Kit and Miu.

Now to answer your concern about the draw vs normal people, i think norms do have a power pool, which are either undeveloped or unused due to perhaps unawakened powers. Way I came to this theory is the fact they only considered those with known powers as supers. But what if someone has a latent or undeveloped power that has yet to emerge? Lily's younger brother for example went into a coma when his powers awakened due to accidentally sending his astral self somewhere with no way to return. Before the power awakened he would most likely have had a power pool in my opinion but until Felix examined him I do not know if Lily even realized her brother had a power.

    2. I've been contemplating on how to respond to both of your comments.

At one point I considered saying nothing :)

I think I can answer most of your questions with, "If Felix isn't aware of something, it won't be included in the story."

I try very hard to keep everything POV relevant. If it isn't something he's paying attention to, doesn't care about, or doesn't know, it won't be written.

In regards to both Kit and Miu, this applies.

In regards to the points, Leemos is correct, even mundane people will have point values. Just not many.

I'll be sure to spend a few sentences reiterating the point system in book two.

    3. Thsnks for replying. Like I said, I'm not trying to give you a hard time least of all damage your motivation. I just hate being left in the dark about things I'm curious about and was expecting to get a reveal on. I also seem to have a compulsive need to bring up even the smallest problems I have with something I like, so sorry about that.

It does make sense that you only include things Felix himself paid attention to, knew and was taking notice of and omit the things he was either unaware of, didn't care enough to find out or was just too insensitive to notice. Just like I said, it can feel a little frustrating.
Plus I did think that Felix would have checked what benefit he got the first time he bought a non-super since it's something that benefits him directly, that's all.

@Leemos Squall; War maiden made more sense since she seemed very focused on training their security forces up, especially after the attacks and we knew she was also developing a relationship with Felicia. So it seemed natural she had other priorities than hang out with Felix.

Once again, I quite enjoyed pretty much everything else about the novel and I'm very much looking forward to the 2nd. I'll definitely buy it. :)

  14. Loved this Book! I’m so glad you’re continuing the story and can’t wait to read it. I really enjoyed the humor, there were numerous laugh out loud moments, like “...hauled out into the street and beaten to death with plastic spoons.” I’m still laughing at that one.

I hope that you’ll be able to expand on Miu’s backstory/power/unique mind, I can see her being a really interesting character.

One question I had while reading is if Felix’s power works on anything he owns, can he create some kind of contract to say that he owns his body, there by letting him tweak himself?

  17. Loved the book, in fact just finished reading it the 4th time around. But I need to ask; is Felix's powers due to Runner. I mean that in the finishing scenes of Otherlife:Awakenings Runner stared to create new worlds. Is this in anyway connected to the fantastical aspect of "Super Sales On Super Heroes"

    1. Also you never seemed to explain why the Heroes association had such a grudge against Felix and invested so many resources into destroying him? I mean the explanation kit gave was okay but they were surely not aware of how much more powerful she had become under Felix. They must have also been aware of the fact that she had already fought Skipper and failed so why was she so integral to their plan?

Or depending on the situation, or topic at hand. Make them seem like a tough gritty PMC/ operator, but in reality they're actually super nice. Anyway, my 2 cents on that.

  23. Loved your book super sales... listened to the audiobook. So stoked for the sequel. I will preorder!

    I have two humble recommendations:
1: have Felix be more curious about the city he lives in. It feels like it might be a good idea to have him interact with some non-secret antagonists that are annoying to deal with. People that he can't just crush or overwhelm... maybe a baddie that is immune to super abilities or that it is too powerful to mess with
    2:
No one ever seems to argue with Felix in the group other than kit. Large organizations have feuds. Even magic slave organizations must by necessity have factions that compete for resources. More than lily and kit must have had some kind of life that requires their attention other than with Felix.

I loved lots of the characters! Lily and the wolf girl were great. I really enjoyed Felicia and Mr. Smith
I really enjoyed the nameless/recurring bad guys
Tanker and speedy. Not that I did not enjoy the others...those were just the best imho.

I would also like to humbly recommend that u go into slightly more detail about the world. How does the world economy function? How does the army and intelligence organizations work? Wouldn't they be, I dunno, interested in something as small/indefatigable/loud as Felix? Also it seems to me that Felix has not had to make enough difficult choices. He found shooting those people too easy and it fit with him almost from page one of the story...but what if he had to make a choice he could not avoid? Like I dunno the dark knight conundrum with Rachel, or star treks good of the many etc. His ability to bring the dead back is a real...obstacle for making obstacles seem real for him. Perhaps a hidden consequence is in order?
Maybe have a super who convinces everyone religion is real? Or even just a good speaker?
Babies stop getting born? His people are not themselves... I dunno.

An antislavery law would totally crush him.

Anyway love the book! I bought a bunch of your stuff and look forward to the sequel.

Started the book and yep, its Freaking amazing. What a fun approach as well. All I can think was "is this guy an anti-anti-hero?" I found myself watching the time left for the story and dreading the ending not wanting it to be over. Once it finished I was immediately searching for book 2. For me this book was like an amazing dessert. Fun, entertaining and I was really able to relate to the characters. I enjoy thinking of possible plots for the next book and I'm excited to see the direction it goes. Especially when what I thought would happen in the first book was not what ended up happening. 30. Fantastic book. I had similar thoughts before I started it, but man am I glad I got it. Absolutely one of my new favorites. While I have to admit, Felix's general ineptitude at fighting is annoying. I do prefer that approach rather than him being good at everything. And like one of the girls said (I think it was Andrea) I like that they have to be his protector, not like it's everyday they protect the damsel in distress. The only real issue I had with Felix's continuity (in regard to his ineptitude), one of those moments that pulls you away from the story for a moment. Throughout the book he constantly says that he has no idea what's going on as far as the soldiers. But towards the end when he's going to open the steel doors. He's looking through his stuff for, "c4 or a breaching charge". I don't feel like Felix would know the terminology for that. C4 I understand, almost everyone knows what c4 is. But even most videogames don't use the term breaching charge, that's a little more of a specific military term. Or... I'm just grasping at straws that aren't there, and it's more common knowledge than I thought.

Anyway I'm glad to hear word on a sequel is in the works. Until then I'll just have to reread this about a thousand times until then.

Anyway, I am pretty sure I am not the only one who wants to know, but by any chance could you tell us how far you are in finishing book 2, if it be a percentage or a vague fraction. I also want to add that you could maybe add in super powers to the second book that are based off of other books so that there could be lots more interesting powers(not saying that you are lacking in making good ones). If you were to do that, I might recommend that you read the Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.

  36. Loved book one, but hope in second he will less heavily depend on his luck and more on his team, clever thinking, electronic safeguards and mostly on his improved skills. I doubt he's luck stat is (was) as high as some of his girls and he already saved his life largely depending on it in book 1 to much - like jumping to lift shaft, leaving his armor and fighting with superheroes with guns/lucky shots not mentioning other times. In all those situations he was super lucky and survived. I'm not saying he now need to be unlucky, but would want to see more reasonable resolutions if possible.

  40. Great Book! I really enjoyed it! I'm listening to it for the second time and many more to come. I liked that how the characters developed throughout the book. I have a few questions if you can answer them, if not I totally understand. A man has his secrets. Is Felix in the next book going to have someone with just the highest stats and best abilities? Kind of like a pocket superman or a small team of them or is Felix going to be the one man army without the suit? Also are we going deeper with each character that wasn't too well talked about? I know Felix only discussed who he was with and didn't pay mind to anyone else. Also don't forget Vikky to make her super deadly as Felix promised :P Thank yiu for making an outstanding book and I can't wait for more to come!

    1. Is Felix in the next book going to have someone with just the highest stats and best abilities?: Probably not. Too world breaking.

is Felix going to be the one man army without the suit?: Same as above

Also are we going deeper with each character that wasn't too well talked about?: Some! Not all.

Also don't forget Vikky to make her super deadly as Felix promised :P: Yes and No.

If you want more, email me. I don't like posting too much spoilery stuff on the main page.

Be careful what you ask though. I -will- answer.

    2. Thank you very much for replying! Yeah I figured as much, being world breaking and all. Decided to ask anyways because curiosity can be the best of us all sometimes. I can't wait for the next book!

  41. Great book and impressive use of a gaming mechanic as a plot device. Felix and god mode in Fallout have a lot in common. I am curious as to how you manage to write so well so quickly?

    1. I legitimately don't have an answer for that.

I'm a discovery writer, and it's more of a stream of consciousness form of writing. It all just... comes out.

I've taken to working and sometimes streaming at the same time. Take a peak sometime, it really just happens without planning.

  42. I love your book. I also like how you made the guild of heroes the bad guys. I have grown up with comic books as a kid and very few story's show you how even the good side can be just as bad as the evil side. In some cases worst.

    Thank you very much.
    P.S

Could you put a note in there about how his power works. I mean if he uses there points then they don't powers. There was a few times when he would use all his points and then give there powers back. Also if they use there powers would they not use his points? Also what are the points? What are they taking from the person? Just some food for thought.

    1. I could answer all of that for you, but it would actually spoil the story.

Email me if you want me to respond. I won't put spoilers on the blog :)

  43. Great book. I believe this series could be far bigger then expected. Executed correctly I could see Felix becoming as iconic as Professor Xavier. A true leader of Super Heroes who have undying loyalty to their cause. Willingly giving up their freedom and identity for the greater good.

    Bravo.

  44. Listening to it on audible on my commute. The person narrating it does a very good job. About halfway through.

The points don't translate well to oral narration, gets annoying, but a minor annoyance.

    Fun listen, certainly different.

I love reading the reviews, particularly negative ones. They are a hoot.

Apparently if your book doesn't abviouy slam slavery on every page it is unacceptable.

The lawyer stuff was a highlight. I could live without the sausage:)

    1. Yeah. You'll never please everyone.

My favorite reviews are people who come out screaming, "It has a harem! And the MC isn't a hero!"

Yep, pretty sure there's warning in the blurb... oh... yes... there is... what a shame.

  45. Just finished your book in record time. Usually it takes a few chapter for me to eat hooked, but with yours I was “in” right away. Thank you for your hard work and hope that your next book in this series comes ASAP

  46. I'm glad I finally found this blog!

To be honest, I have a suspicion about what may be the deal with Felix and his inability to modify himself. It's a guess, and out of respect I won't post it here, but if I see it played out in future novels, it'll make for a very clever twist! PLEASE DON'T RUIN IT FOR ME! I'm falling in love with the world he's in!

I thoroughly enjoyed the novels! I'd never thought someone could get me angry at avengers/justice leaguer vigilantes! (Or suspend my judgement of slave ownership!)

You have a real gift for writing!

One minor suggestion: it may be a bit late for this, but you may want to consider balancing out some of his supporting cast with some males. Preferably some "Lancers".

Eagerly looking forward to the next book!

    1. Hey there.

Thanks for the kind words, and i'm glad you enjoyed the story.

I won't say anything as to why he can't modify himself, but I can say the answer is fairly obvious, and dumb at the same time. :D

Next book should be out in December.

  47. Did you say in your reply to Bill Liao that you stream your writing sessions? Like on twitch or youtube live or something? How do I see the stream schedule and where do you stream it?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I do indeed stream on ocassion as I write.

My writing style is that of "discovery" which means very little is planned in advance. So... I can stream while I normally write. :)

I do it once or twice a week right now, but there's no commitment on my part.

      Yet.

  48. Just wondering if there is a release date for book 2 yet. I've listened to the first book 3 times over these past 2 months and I'd really like to listen to it right before the next one comes out. Also, will there be a pre-order?

    1. First week of December.

No pre-order. The day it's ready, is the day it goes on Amazon.

  49. I loved this book. Just finished it on Audible. Jeff was a fantastic narrator. I was thrilled to come across this thread about a book 2. I dreaded the end coming everytime I turned it on in my car. I love the scenario in which a villain runs the city but really not much changes as far as daily life other than the whole slave thing. I am very interested in why the Guild of Heroes just straight up started attacking Felix without ever trying to talk with him and how they managed to control so much as far as his bank accounts and execute such heavy attacks only to have their base get taken down by a few small squads and one very angry Felix. There is just so much left to be explained or expanded upon. I can't wait for the next book

    1. Also, I've seen it mentioned on here a few times, but I'm definitely okay with a little more detail given to the intimate moments between Felix and, well, whoever. It gives more depth to his growing relationship with the women who started off just as slaves meant to be tools for his growing business. It's even better when the women themselves are the ones instigating it when Felix was trying to keep in all professional to begin with.

    2. Wrong series of books.

Randi Darren is where the detailed stuff happens.

  50. I put off getting this book because there was only one, and the premise just didn't catch me. I couldn't have been more wrong and I'm only a few chapters in. I want an HBO show on this a videogame series, I just want more. Thank you for this.
P.S. I like how the relationships are so far. You do you.

  57. Wow. So, you have a universe? This and WW a pair of worlds runner created and let run? I would love to read a book where WW/SSSH interact heavily as the main plot. I was soooooooo into the part where Vince/Felix met each other

  58. I finished listening to Part 1, and am in the middle of book 2. My only request, is if there's a book 3, to try to get get either Jeff of Nick to narrate. They're both great readers, and have different strengths. Jeff's character differentation seems a touch better, but Nick's overall delivery is smoother and more modulating. I admit tho, I love Nick's narration of the Kingkiller Chronicles, and my relistening of that series multiple times, causes me to think those characters are talking sometimes if I let my mind wander!
In general though, I think I preferred Nick Podehl

  59. WIlliam! Just got finished listening to the second book! My husband and I LOVE your work! This series is AMAZING and I love where you are going with the characters! Can't wait for Book III!

I will be honest, the replacement had me a little disappointed for the second Narrator at first, but I got use to and fell in love with his voice soon enough! :D
